Purchase of influential news source on China coincides with anticipated launch of FP’s enhanced Asia reporting and analysis
September 11, 2013 – WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, FP Group CEO and Editor-at-Large David Rothkopf announced the acquisition of Tea Leaf Nation, an e-magazine that has become a leading source of insight and analysis for China experts worldwide. The purchase of TLN is part of FP’s commitment to bring enhanced Asia news content and coverage to its readers in the U.S. and across the globe. The FP Group is a division of The Washington Post Company.
“We’re extremely pleased to announce the addition of Tea Leaf Nation to our Foreign Policy family. As a go-to news source for China policy-makers, journalists, academics and the tech community, this new platform will expand our capacity to bring analysis of news and events in Asia to our readers in real-time,” Rothkopf said. “The purchase of Tea Leaf Nation gives FP a presence on the ground in China and signals our broad commitment to significantly increasing our coverage of that country and all of Asia. Look for further announcements from us soon of expanded coverage in this area and of new FP events in the region.”
Tea Leaf Nation is an e-magazine founded in 2011 that has become a must-read source for China experts ranging from journalists and diplomats to academics and analysts. Based both on the ground in China and in the United States, Tea Leaf Nation helps scour Chinese social media every day to spot trends, gauge sentiment, and carry major news stories one level deeper.
“The acquisition of Tea Leaf Nation is both a welcome addition to Foreign Policy’s exceptional international resources and is also a sign of our commitment to continuing to build on the success the FP Group has enjoyed recently,” said Donald E. Graham, Chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Company (NYSE: WPO). “As events remind us every day, the unique role FP has developed in its almost half a century of existence is more essential than ever and we’re proud to be associated with its on-going development.”

Tea Leaf Nation has been a labor of love ever since our founding in late December, 2011, and this transition will allow us to sustain and deepen our work. We’re immensely grateful to all of our writers for their dedication and enthusiasm, and to the Foreign Policy Group for showing faith in our organization. We look forward to becoming part of the FP team and to working within Foreign Policy to help expand their Asia coverage and activities,” said Tea Leaf Nation Founder David Satterthwaite Wertime.
